Joshua 12 - 21 Dividing the land

Joshua 12

As far as I can make out, Joshua was about 40 years old when he spied out the land of Canaan, Israel then wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, then they spent some time taking possession of the land, at this point God points out to Joshua that he is old - I suspect that Joshua did not really need to be reminded!

The rest of the chapter describes the division of the lands to the east of the river Jordan that Moses gave to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manesseh.

It is probably best read these chapters with an atlas or Google maps/earth to hand.

Joshua 13-19

The only other surviving member of the 12 spies that Moses sent out is Caleb, and in this chapter he gets the land where he spied out - he has waited for 45 years for this land, and he takes the city of Hebron.

The rest of these chapters describe the borders of the different tribes

Judah did not manage to take the whole of the allocated land, they did not manage to take the city of Jerusalem.
Caleb's land is in the area of Judah, and Caleb offers his daughter in marriage to the guy who captured the town of Debir, Caleb's brother winds up marrying his niece, which I am not sure is entirely legal!

Ephraim did not manage to dislodge the people from Gezer

Manesseh did not manage to dislodge the Canaanites from within their region.

The rest of the land is divided by lots

Joshua gives some

Chapter 20 gives details of cities of refuge - these are places where somebody accused of manslaughter can flee to avoid family retribution from the relatives of the accidentally killed person.

Chapter 21 describes the towns and regions that are to be given to the tribe of Levi -each tribe gives some cities for the use of the l,evites.

Again you may do as well to read these chapters with a map - the description in the text does not really help when I just read it.
