Psalm 55 Oh for the wings of a dove

Psalm 55

One of my favourite bands is the Ska band Madness, and one of their songs I really like is "For the wings of a dove" which is reminds me of this Psalm.

The song (playing right now) is about being positive but the Psalm starts off anything but positive, David is troubled in his mind and really upset by the things his enemy is saying and their threats.
His prayer is for God to hear him and not ignore his plea and answer David.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I can really understand David, nothing is going right and God seems conspicuous by his absence.

David says here that he is practically scared to death he is afraid and trembles and horrified at his situation.
It is in verse 6 that David wishes to seek escape flying like a bird and leaving his troubles behind flee to a remote place safe from trouble and storms.

It would be really nice if God would confuse the wicked and confound their words, in the city there is violence and strife (unlike our cities?)
It would be a noble aim to banish from our land violence, strife, anger, malice and abuse and all destructive forces.
Hopefully we can play our part in this aim and tell our political leaders that their aims should be to make this land flow with justice, mercy and righteousness.

I'd like to share some words of Stephen R Lawhead from his "Pendragon cycle" that I really like-
This is called "The dream of Taliesin"

There is a land, shining with goodness
where each man protects his brother's dignity as readily as his own
where war and want have ceased and all live under the same law of love and honour

It is a land bright with truth
where a man's word is his pledge and falsehood is banished
where children sleep safe in their mother's arms and never know fear or pain

It is a land where kings extend their hands in justice
rather than reach for the sword
Where mercy, kindness and compassion flow like deep water
and man revere virtue, revere truth, revere beauty above comfort, pleasure or selfish gain

A land where peace reigns in the hearts of men,
where faith blazes like a beacon from every hill and love like a fire from every hearth
Where the true God is worshipped and his ways acclaimed by all.

Oh, to be able to buy a plane ticket to this land!!

In verse 12 David reveals that his enemy is actually a close friend who has betrayed him, one who David would spend happy times worshipping God together.
In fact David does not believe this man is an enemy at all "If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it"

David's response is to call to God evening, morning and noontime, God hears his cry and answers him, rescuing David from the battle.

The Psalm ends with some good advice-
Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you:
He will never let the righteous be shaken.

Psalm 54 Reliance on God

Psalm 54

This Psalm was written by David when the Ziphites had told Saul where he was hiding at the time.

The Psalm starts with a prayer to God to save the writer and hear his prayer.

David's immediate problem is that arrogant foes are attacking him and ruthless people are hunting for him, but surely God will help him and sustain him.

Let evil recoil on those who slander me: in your faithfulness destroy them.

What is the point of a freewill offering, God does not need it?
Perhaps sometimes we should just act out of gratitude for something good that God has done.

I will praise you name Lord, for it is good, you have delivered me from all me troubles and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes

I think the last part of the Psalm was written before God had actually got David out of his predicament, and is an act of faith.

Psalm 53 A fools heart

Psalm 53

"The fool says in his heart "There is no God""
I'm told that the word fool here denotes one without morals rather than one without intelligence. There are some quite intelligent people who are atheists, and some atheists are very moral people, I don't want to claim that religious people have the monopoly on intelligence or on morals,

Through history there have been men and women with no morals who would oppress those they dislike - even those who have not harmed them, look at the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century and the rule of IS (Islamic state) today.

God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

There have been a large number of men and women of faith who have striven to understand, it was faith and curiosity that led men like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Kepler, Gregor Mendel etc to delve the mysteries of life and the universe.

Unfortunately there are no people who do only good in the world, everybody has turned away and become corrupt.

This mirrors the doctrines of my faith - because we all do wrong we are separated from God who wants to have a close and living relationship with his creation.

Christians believe that God visited earth in the person of Jesus Christ and that by his death and defeating death we again have the chance to be in relation with God.

As for those evil doers and fools without morals, who oppress those who are different and powerless, in the end they are overcome with terror and dread,

The Psalm finishes with the wish that God would act and save Israel - he did in Jesus.

Psalm 52 Trust in yourself - just see what happens

Psalm 52

This Psalm of David was written when somebody ratted him out to his deranged father in Law, the king at the time, Saul.
This Psalm was written earlier than Psalm 51 when David himself was king, so why this order of the Psalms?
Perhaps it highlights a difference between somebody who repents and turns to God and somebody who is quite happy to ignore God?

Some people are not just wicked, they openly flaunt it and throw in the faces of those around them.
This Psalmist does not have much positive to say about their prospects - Surely God will bring out down to everlasting ruin, he will uproot you from the land of the living.

Note to self - let God sort out the wicked, he is far better (and more fair) than I am at it!

Those who see the hand of God working in this situation will see and respect God, though not the wicked person - "Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others"

The Righteous person is like an olive tree planted in the house of God and flourishing, trusting in God's unfailing love for all time.

It is good every now and then to follow the example of the last verse of this Psalm - look in your past and see what God has done for you, what do you have to be thankful for?
I mentioned before that one of the people who inspired me to write this blog is an agnostic Jewish guy called AJ Jacobs in his book "my year of living biblically", one thing he found was that he became more thankful as a person for trying to consider God.

Psalm 51 When it all goes wrong

Psalm 51

This Psalm was written by King David when he has been spotted by God of adultery and murder, recorded in the books of Kings.

God sent the prophet Nathan to accuse David and Nathan told what is probably the first parable in the Bible. About a rich man stealing his poor neighbors treasured lamb to give a meal to his guest.

In churches today (especially the Catholic tradition) there is a sacrament (where heaven touches earth is my definition of that word)    called reconciliation (or confession), there is something liberating about confessing what you have done wrong - somehow it loses some of its grip over you.

In this Psalm David confesses that he has done wrong and begs God to make him clean again, David's sinful nature is at odds with God's love of right and justice.
David (and many others who try and follow God) find that the wrong we do separate us from God and make us dirty and unclean.

David does not expect to get off without consequence, in verse 7 he says "Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean, wash me and I will be whiter than snow".

I think I can echo Davids prayer in verses 10 - 12 "Create in me a pure heart oh God and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me"

Christians believe that Jesus came into the world as God's son to take the punishment for our sins and wrongdoings, and offers us forgiveness.

Having received forgiveness from God, David will show other sinners the ways of God and use his lips to worship him.
"Open my lips, LORD, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise"

God does not want ritual, burned offerings or hypocrites, he wants a person willing to admit they have done wrong, with a broken spirit and contrite heart. God will NEVER, EVER turn you away.

I'd like to finish with 2 examples - one is from a movie, I cannot remember which one either "The Shawshank redemption" or "the Green Mile" where a prisoner points out the the first person Jesus got into heaven was not Peter, or James or John, but the condemned man on the cross next to him who prayed "Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom" and Jesus replied "I tell you the truth, this day you will be with me in paradise"

The other one is from a hymn that we sometimes sing "To God be the Glory" which has a verse "The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment, from Jesus, a pardon receives"

Psalm 50 What does God want?

Psalm 50

First, apologies for the lack of posts recently, I'm trying to set up a you tube channel as well and it is a bit of a steep learning curve.

Hopefully things are settling down now and I can return to normal and continue both the you tube and the blog.

Anyway back to the Psalm, this one is written by Asaph

The Psalm starts with a description of God and his character - animate, bright in glory and in command of the elements.
God is also described as a God of justice.

God does not have a complaint that his people offer sacrifices, but he does not need them - those who follow God please him, but we cannot give him anything to satisfy his needs.

Meanwhile those who do not honour God are charged with hypocrisy for repeating the words of the Law they have no intention of keeping.
If these people see a thief they join his company and help him out, using lying tongues they speak evil and deciet and will testify against their own brother!
God may not speak up when we do these things, but don't be fooled - God is a God of justice and is not like the wicked people - one day they have to answer to a higher power.

I'm playing computer games on it...

Psalm 49 The value of a life

Psalm 49

This Psalm starts with an injunction for people to listen and pay attention - the message is not only for Israel but for all people in the world both rich and poor, highborn and lowborn.

What is the value of a human life? I just finished an audiobook yesterday called the Martian by Andy Weir. In the book an astronaut is stranded during a mission to mars. In the end he is rescued and as he travels back to earth he considers how much his rescue cost. The author carried on - even today huge searches are carried out for lost people, the RNLI and other volunteers such as mountain rescue put themselves at risk to save the life of those who are in danger.
Let us take a moment to be grateful for these people, give thanks for them and their work and hope we never have to use their services!

"Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me, who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?

No one can redeem the life or another or give to God a ransom for them.
A human life is literally priceless.

I'm going to speak out here with a challenge. It seems to me in the UK over the last few years that the government has been so keen to "balance the books" that they have ignored at best and penalised at worst the most vulnerable people in the country. They bash on about immigration targets, according to the BBC news website last week the net immigration target of 100,000 was missed by a factor of 3 (according to the story 57% were from the EU who have right to travel and work in the EU and 25% were non EU citizens) I feel that our political leaders have lost the care for people and want to try and appear tough on benefits and immigrants.
Personally I think that we should welcome immigrants and offer a refuge for asylum seekers. After all most "British" people are immigrants at some point or another - all it is is a matter of timing!
As Christians we are supposed to be called to a kingdom where nobody is native born (apart from Jesus).
So as the election looms let us tell our political leaders to bring compassion back into politics rather than party point scoring.
