Psalm 53 A fools heart

Psalm 53

"The fool says in his heart "There is no God""
I'm told that the word fool here denotes one without morals rather than one without intelligence. There are some quite intelligent people who are atheists, and some atheists are very moral people, I don't want to claim that religious people have the monopoly on intelligence or on morals,

Through history there have been men and women with no morals who would oppress those they dislike - even those who have not harmed them, look at the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century and the rule of IS (Islamic state) today.

God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.

There have been a large number of men and women of faith who have striven to understand, it was faith and curiosity that led men like Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Kepler, Gregor Mendel etc to delve the mysteries of life and the universe.

Unfortunately there are no people who do only good in the world, everybody has turned away and become corrupt.

This mirrors the doctrines of my faith - because we all do wrong we are separated from God who wants to have a close and living relationship with his creation.

Christians believe that God visited earth in the person of Jesus Christ and that by his death and defeating death we again have the chance to be in relation with God.

As for those evil doers and fools without morals, who oppress those who are different and powerless, in the end they are overcome with terror and dread,

The Psalm finishes with the wish that God would act and save Israel - he did in Jesus.
